Weddings are a happy event for everyone involved, but it is also an emotional day especially during moments like the exchanging of vows.

It is often difficult for couples to express all that needs to be said through traditional vows, so many are choosing to write their own unique promises. Recently, a bride decided that not only did she want to say vows to her groom, she wanted to do the same to another special person in her life.

Senior Airman Emily Leehan and US Marine Corps Sergeant Joshua Newville got married at Quincy Cellars in Ripley, New York with a beautiful ceremony that left no dry eyes in room. But, it was Newville’s 4 year old son Gage’s reaction at the altar that caught the attention of the world.

“I want you to be safe, and to try your hardest, and to be a good person,” Leehan told Gage. “I know that you and I will butt heads, but—” she continued, but was interrupted by Gage’s adorable sobs.

“Buddy, it’s okay,” the youngster’s father said in an attempt to calm him down, but his cries were uncontrollable.

“When she started reciting the vows, that’s when the emotion took over and he lost it,” Newville told ABC News. “The whole day was pretty emotional, so I was just trying to keep myself together and keep him together.”

After Gage’s initial tearful reaction to his new step-mother’s words, Leehan was able to get through the remainder of her heartfelt vows.

“You have helped make me into the woman that I am today, and I may not have given you the gift of life, but life surely gave me the gift of you,” Leehan said before giving Gage a hug and a kiss.

Following the ceremony, guests told Gage how much more special he made the moment, “We were telling him, ‘You did awesome,’ and our family and friends were saying that and told him he made it even better,” Newville said.

The young boy, who is also a Star Wars fan, cleaned up his act and entered the ceremony with the bridal party in a Darth Vader mask and music set to the film series’ theme music.

As for the newlyweds, they’re still on active military duty, so there no plans for a honeymoon just yet. In the meantime they’ll return to their base at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey and Gage, who currently lives with his mother in Virginia, will be making as many visits as possible.
